Wing Tsun Summer Seminar 2017
Wing Tsun - Ireland's summer seminar took place in Sligo on the 28th of May. The seminar was delivered by Sifu Michael O'Leary who is a 4th Higher Grade in Wing Tsun Kung Fu.
Students started with being checked on the Siu-Nim-Tau form before working on reaction training. This is where a student learns how to absorb their opponent's kinetic energy into elastic potential energy in their own body and use it against them. Depending on the direction of the opponent's force, in order to have cover, a Bong, Tan, Jum or Kau Sau can be used.
Students then briefly worked on some basic techniques where the aim is to attack the attacker. However if the punching hand is blocked and the initial attack fails, the reactions were then superimposed on top of the basic attacking techniques, the punches were briefly converted into Bong, Tan, Jum or Kau Sau before finding their way to the opponent again as a strike. Student's worked on many examples of the principle on absorbing their opponent's force and using it against them and finished the seminar with some Lat-Sau drills.
Congratulations to the following students who successfully passed their examinations.
Francie Johnston - 5th SG
Tony Davis - 5th SG
Dapo Ski - 2nd SG
Stephen Brockbank - 1st SG
Conor O'Brien - 1st SG
As with other seminars, we had a guest instructor give us a sample of their art. Dai Si-Hing Willem Akkermans who teaches in Sligo Leitrim and Roscommon taught some Choy Li Fut for one hour. Along with Wing Tsun, Choy Li Fut is a famous and practical system of Kung Fu but while Wing Tsun specialises in close range linear movements, Choy Li Fut contains many powerful, circular movements applied from a longer distance. We started with a brief warm up and Willem brought the participants through various stances, steps, punches and other hand movements. Towards the end of the hour he then tied everything together and showed how they could be combined for combat. He is an excellent teacher and gave the participants a nice insight into this beautiful and practical art.
The next seminar will take place in the Blanchardstown school on Sunday the 27th of August where the guest instructor will be Sifu Brian Kennedy who will teach an hour of Jeet Kune Do. For details on the Facebook event, please click on the icon below.
