Wing Tsun Kung Fu

Wing Tsun is a type of Kung-Fu well known for its effective fighting skills. The art was created over 300 years ago in China by Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun from the Shaolin temple. Ng Mui taught the art to a young woman, Yim Wing Tsun from whom the art gets its name and it was made famous by Bruce Lee who studied the art from the age of 13.

Compared to many other martial arts which are based upon sport, health or spiritual discipline, etc., the purpose of Wing Tsun is practical combat.

Wing Tsun is based upon specific principles and all movements, techniques and drills are an extension of these principles. This makes it a straightforward martial art to learn as students can always see how the small details fit into the big picture. It also means that students are more likely to successfully apply Wing Tsun when needed as the principles teach them how to think for themselves and adapt to situations as they occur rather than trying to remember previously learned techniques while under mental and physical stress.

One of Wing Tsun's principles refers to "maximum results for minimum effort" and all movements are based upon economy of motion. This eliminates unnecessary movements, reduces fatigue, minimises the potential for injury and is in stark contrast to other arts where students have to retire in their 30s with bad backs and joint problems. This means that just about anyone can practise Wing Tsun safely.
